Artist Statement
Mahala Mrozek was born in Seattle, Washington and received their BFA in Fiber at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2023. Their work centers around creating domestic decor and wearables, aimed at transporting the viewer into intimate and imagined realities. Their high-craft handmade objects are inspired by family heirlooms and traditions and invite viewers to touch and interact with their pieces to better connect with the process behind the work. To facilitate the connection between viewers and their work, Mahala makes the characters inhabiting these spaces distinctly nonhuman and animal-like, creating a more welcoming subject for the viewers to project their own understanding onto.
Today, Mahala continues to work at MICA as a college Admission Counselor, mentoring high school students through portfolio reviews and other resources to encourage the pursuit of an artistic career.
